Do You Think Being An American Sucks Right Now?

I figured since this weekend is the 4th of July this post would be timely.

Someone told me the other day...

"America is the worst country on the planet right now. You guys are fighting amongst yourselves and you can't seem to get your carp together. I don't even know why you keep saying you're the best country on earth. What a disgrace it is to call yourself an American right now."

While some of these statements are true, and I can understand why someone might say these things.

My response to this person was simply this...

I Am An American.

Is it always glamourous? No.

Do we always do the right thing in every circumstance? No.

Do we have some problems we need to work through? Yes.

Am I disgraced to call myself an American? NO.

Is it glamourous to be or say you're an American right now...  No, it's not but there isn't any other country I'd rather be a part of.

Do we always do the right things...  No, we don't and neither does anyone else.  We make mistakes just like every other country does.

Do we have problems to work through... Obviously, we do, and you know what, so do all the other countries on this planet.  We are not alone in the problems we have to work through, but would you rather that people are allowed to peacefully protest, or would you rather that when people gather together to protest we bring in a tank and run them over?

The people of America today don't really know how good they have it.

If you are one of the people who thinks our country is so awful I'd love for you to go spend some time in another country that isn't America and try to do or say the same things you do here.

(Let me let you in on a little secret... You probably would come back to America because you'd either be in prison or you'd be dead.)

See other countries in the world don't have these problems because they don't have this thing called "Freedom".

In those other countries you speak out or act out and you are done away with.  It doesn't make the news usually because there you are dealt with swiftly and quickly.

Freedom comes with a price people... But so does silence.

So the next time you think "Freedom" isn't any big deal, go talk to or live with some people in another country and see what they have to say about their freedoms.  Oh, that's right... They don't have nearly the freedoms you have.

Ask them if they would like to trade places with you and see what they say.  I'd be willing to bet that 9 out of 10 of them would say they would choose America in a heartbeat.

Am I disgraced to call myself an American?

No, I never have been and I never will be.

I fought for our freedoms and I have been besides many great men and women who did the same. Some came home and some didn't. But what we all shared was a love for our country and a love for Freedom.

This country is perfect, but I will still stand and say it's the best country on this planet.

I've been around this world and I've never been to another place that has the freedoms that we do nor the opportunities we do to make something of yourself.

It's not perfect, but it's home, and it's where we work each day to make it better.

The fight won't be easy, but then what fight for something important ever has been easy.

If you want easy, go to another country.

If you want to be free, then you come to America.

The land of the "Free", because of the brave men and women who have and do still fight daily to protect our way of life.

So I will leave you, my friends, with this final statement and I hope that you will join me the next time someone asks you or tries to tell you how bad our country is...

I Am An American.

And that's all that really needs to be said.
