This Song Changed My Life

One of my favorite songs of all times is called “This Is Now” by Jamey Jasta
In the song he has these couple of lines below:

“How can I change tomorrow if I can’t change today
This is now
If I control myself I control my destiny”

I can’t even begin to tell how many times I’ve listened to this song or just repeated these words to myself in my head.

So often we hear the debate from some people that music really doesn’t matter.

That music cant really make a difference in your life.

Well, I for one don’t believe that for a second.

This song and these few lines have had a big impact on who I am and how I’ve developed my own personal mindset to push myself forward each and every day.

Let's just break this down quick so I can tell you which each of these lines means to me.

“How can I change tomorrow if I can’t change today”

This statement is so very true.

Often times we only look at the big picture or the end goal in life, when what we should be looking at is the small steps it takes each day to get there.

If you aren’t making changes today and if you aren’t taking the steps today you will never get to where you want to be in the future.

Everyone always thinks “change” is a bad thing, but what they don’t realize is that we are all changing every day whether we want to or not.

So except “change” and make it work for you instead of against you.

Make the changes necessary today so that you can change your tomorrow and your future.

“This is now”

Stop worrying about the past, you can’t change it.

All you can do is learn from it.

Don’t get caught up in reliving the past over and over again. The things you did back then do not define who you are today.

Each day you get up is another day to try to make your life better and to move forward, not backward.

Don’t let your past drag you down. What’s done is done. Can it be hard to escape some of the things you’ve done in your past? Yes.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Stop letting other people define who you are by your past. If they can’t let your past go then maybe you need to let them go so you can move forward with your future.

“If I control myself I control my destiny”

If you are willing to study and learn about yourself and to own each and every choice you make then that is how one controls themselves.

Until you can do those things you will never be able to control yourself.

There is an old saying that says:

“Mastering others is a strength. Mastering yourself is true power.” — Lao Tzu

Learning to control yourself is vital if you ever hope to control your own destiny.

Do you know how many people in life currently have gone nowhere or done nothing with their lives because they simply refuse to own the choices they make?

There are thousands of people who fall into this category.

Don’t act for a minute like you don’t know what I’m talking about here or that you don’t know these people.

You know them all too well.

Some might be family members, colleagues, or friends.

And you know what the sad truth is about knowing these people is?

You can’t do anything to save them from themselves till they themselves decide to make a change and to take responsibility for their own decisions in life.

I know that’s harsh and not very kind, but it’s the truth.

So don’t be one of those people.

You have a choice to make each and every day you wake up.

While that choice may not always be easy to make it is still a choice.

Do you know by now what that choice is my friends?

Let me tell it to you one more time…

“How can I change tomorrow if I can’t change today
This is now
If I control myself I control my destiny”

There you go. It’s really that easy my friends.

I’m a better person today because I heard this song back in 2003 and these three lines have been etched in my brain and in my life ever since.

I hope that by sharing these simple lines with you that in some way it will have the same impact on your life that it has had on mine.
