Do We Have To Have Sorrow?

What does “Sorrow” even mean?

According to the dictionary, it means:

I was listening to a song the other day by Jamey Jasta and he made the statement in the lyrics that:

“All life’s sorrows are our own creations.”

Huh… I said to myself, and that got me thinking.

This is a question that been in the back of my mind for some time now.

Is our sorrows in life really what we make them to be?

Or is there nothing we can do about sorrow and it’s just something we have to go through?

I read (in Dec. 2017) “The Daily Stoic” by Ryan Holiday.

One of the main things I learned from reading this book daily for a year is that everything in our life is our “Perspective”.

It’s one of the few things that we as individuals have absolute control over in our own lives.

So if that is true is there ever any reason to have sorrow in our lives?

Let’s ask ourselves a few quick questions to answer the question above:

  • Do we decide if something or someone is lost in our lives?
  • Do we decide if we are disappointed by something or someone in our lives?
  • Do we decide what is considered a misfortune (or a fortune for that matter) in our lives?

If we can answer “Yes” to all of the questions above or at least the ones that apply to the current situation we are dealing with is there any need for sorrow in our lives?

I don’t have all of the answers and anyone who knows me knows I don’t even have some of the answers, but this is a question that has been in my mind for some time now.

I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on this, so please leave me some comments and share your thoughts and insights into this question with me.

Who knows, maybe between you and I, we can work this problem out.

  1. Hey love, great post. Great question. While I can answer 'YES' to every question above, I then ask but what about the heart? Are they not head level questions? I know Eckhart Tolle would have a different viewpoint again about what we decide or not decide, however, in this present moment, I do believe we need sorrow in our life at some point, to remind us of the joy in life. I think it's important we feel all the emotions, sadness, grief, love, joy, passion, anger, sorrow etc, it makes us human, it makes u s empathetic, it makes us create change. I just believe we shouldn't dwell in the darkness, but remember without dark there is no light. Just my thoughts 💜

  2. I do agree with you that we should feel all of the emotions that you stated and it does make us human and empathetic, I guess the only thing else I would add to that is that I don't believe that our emotions should rule us.

    1. I agree which is why I said not to dwell in the darkness. We must feel, because to feel is what makes us empathetic towards others and human :)
